Examining the hype around one of the NFL’s top defensive players.
But first, take a look at the five leading competitors to break the takeover record that has been maintained for over a decade
The shift towards a league centered on passing has made outfielders a popular commodity in the market. The team is willing to throw the bag to the passer and receiver, as they have the ability to move the chain and light up the scoreboard as an electric organizer for the outfield.
Calvin Johnson enjoyed his Hall of Fame career as a WR1 player in Detroit, using his superior physique, speed, and athletic ability to overpower defenders in space. This three time all professional athlete and six time professional bowl athlete dominated the competition from the first day, especially during his record breaking 2012 campaign when he almost surpassed the 2000 yard mark (1964 yard).
Although this record has lasted for over a decade, the staggering numbers released by the catchers in the past few seasons make Johnson’s mark look fragile as he enters 2024.
“What I mean is, it will definitely decline at some point, so that’s how it is,” Johnson recently told the Detroit Liberty. I held it down, I don’t know how long it has been, it’s been more than ten years now.
Last season, 28 passers had a passing distance of over 1000 yards, including two winger catchers (Tyreek Hill and CeeDee Lamb) who exceeded 1700 yards. In 2023, 12 players received the ball 100 or more times, and it was only a matter of time before someone broke Johnson’s record as the ultimate WR1 in a game dominated by passing.
